The White House is reportedly exerting strong pressure on Congress to lift its remaining sanctions on Syria — the harshest of which are imposed under the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act.
According to a report by Al-Monitor, former U.S. President Donald Trump had already lifted most sanctions through an executive order, but the toughest measures — those that effectively isolated Syria from the global economy — were enacted under the Caesar Act and therefore require congressional action to be repealed.
The outlet quoted a senior congressional official as saying that officials from the White House and the Departments of State and Treasury “have made it completely clear to Congress that the administration’s official position is the full and final repeal of the Caesar Act.”
Another congressional source told Al-Monitor that U.S. envoy Tom Barrack has made phone calls in recent weeks to senior Republican lawmakers, urging them to support the repeal of the law.
