The official Syrian news agency reported early Thursday that Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shar’ met with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.
The agency published photos showing Al-Shar’ shaking hands with Trump, with First Lady Melania Trump present, without providing further details.
This marks the second meeting between Al-Shar’ and Trump, following their encounter in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in May.
During the 80th session of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, President Al-Shar’ spoke about Syria’s internal situation, foreign relations, and reconstruction investments, and addressed ongoing Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, affirming his country’s commitment to the 1974 disengagement agreement.
Al-Shar’ stated:
“The Syrian story is one where emotions are stirred, and pain mixes with hope; it is a struggle between good and evil, and between the weak truth, which has no supporter but God, and the strong falsehood, which possesses all the tools of killing and destruction.”
He added:
“I come to you from Damascus, the capital of history and the cradle of civilizations — a beautiful country that taught the world the meaning of civilization, the value of humanity, and peaceful coexistence, becoming a beacon for the world to follow.”
