The Syrian Minister of Justice arrived in Beirut, Lebanon, heading a judicial delegation on an official visit aimed at discussing several pending legal files between the two countries, foremost among them the issue of Syrian detainees in Lebanese prisons, particularly in Roumieh Prison, which holds the largest number of these detainees.
This visit comes days after Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani visited Beirut, leading a high-level delegation that also included the Minister of Justice, reflecting increasing official attention from Damascus to the issue of Syrian detainees in Lebanon.
The Syrian Minister of Justice is scheduled to hold meetings with his Lebanese counterpart, Adel Nassar, to discuss legal avenues for accelerating the trials of some Syrian detainees, and ways to reach understandings that could lead to the release of hundreds of them or their transfer to Syria to complete trials under Syrian courts.
According to informed sources, an agreement is expected on a judicial mechanism for handing over some detainees who were arrested in Lebanon in previous years on charges related to affiliation with groups linked to the Syrian revolution, while also exploring ways to speed up the trials of others in preparation for their release.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese side refuses to hand over Syrian detainees accused of participating in clashes with the Lebanese army or involvement in security incidents in Lebanon, emphasizing that any steps on this issue will be carried out under strict judicial standards.
Earlier, the Lebanese Minister of Interior stated from Tripoli on Tuesday that meetings specifically dedicated to the issue of Syrian prisoners would be held in the coming period, stressing the existence of cooperation with the Syrian state in this regard.
