Syrian authorities and French extremist fighters reached an agreement on Thursday to end the clashes that erupted a day earlier in the country’s northwest, sources from both sides told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
According to the agreement, which AFP reviewed, a ceasefire was established, and heavy weapons were to be withdrawn from around the Harem camp in Idlib province, where French fighters led by Omar Diaby, also known as Omar Omsen, have been entrenched. Diaby is accused of kidnapping a girl and has refused to surrender to the authorities.
An Idlib security source, who requested anonymity, told AFP on Thursday:
“An agreement was reached, and its terms have been implemented, leading to a ceasefire between both sides, the withdrawal of government heavy weapons, and the opening of the camp to the Syrian government.”
