The Syrian People’s Assembly was formed with a term of 30 months, renewable, based on a mechanism set by the constitutional declaration rather than through direct elections.
Under this system, regional bodies—formed by the Supreme Committee, whose members were appointed by President Ahmad al-Shar’a—elected two-thirds of the 210-member parliament, while al-Shar’a appoints the remaining one-third.
Three provinces—Raqqa, Hasakah, and As-Suwayda—were excluded from representation for “security reasons.”
The spokesperson for the Supreme Electoral Committee, Nawar Najma, said at a press conference announcing the results:
“The number of seats filled in this election is 119, while 21 seats remain vacant in the provinces of As-Suwayda, Raqqa, and Hasakah.”
