Sources revealed that the handover of Bashar al-Assad and the status of Russia’s two military bases will be the key topics of discussion during Syrian President Ahmad al-Shar’a’s visit to Moscow.
A Syrian government source told Agence France-Presse that al-Shar’a will request the extradition of his predecessor, who fled to Russia following his ousting in December of last year.
The Kremlin also announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss the fate of the two Russian military bases in Syria with al-Shar’a.
Russia maintains two main military bases in Syria: the Hmeimim airbase in Latakia province and a naval base in Tartus.
On Wednesday, al-Shar’a arrived in Russia for an official visit to hold talks with Putin regarding bilateral relations and regional and international developments of mutual interest.
The Kremlin confirmed that President Putin will meet with al-Shar’a on Wednesday.
