The High Committee for the Syrian People’s Assembly Elections on Thursday condemned the assassination of Haider Shahin, a parliamentary candidate from Tartus Province, expressing its support for the Ministry of Interior’s efforts to pursue the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
In a statement published Thursday on its Telegram channel, the committee said:
“With deep sorrow and regret, the High Committee for People’s Assembly Elections received the news of the assassination of parliamentary candidate Haider Shahin, a son of dear Tartus, who fell victim to treachery at the hands of criminals from the remnants of the former regime. He passed away on the path of political struggle to build a new Syria, leaving this duty in the hands of the Syrian people.”
The statement continued:
“While the High Committee for Elections condemns this heinous crime, it reaffirms its support for the Ministry of Interior’s efforts to track down the criminals and bring them before the judiciary to receive their just punishment. We also thank the ministry for tightening security measures to ensure the proper conduct of the electoral process.”
